At around 1:30 a.m. on August 30, 1961, Hannelore B., Margot St. and Ursula S. fled from an apartment at Bernauer Straße 2. The border guard observed objects being thrown down to the pave ment from a window, but was unable to see more because the West Berlin police glared flood lights at him. An investigation found that the tenant had slid down a rope with two friends.
