Colored pins mark the most important places on the tours. A yellow pin indicates a station that still needs to be discovered. A green pin indicates a station that has already been visited.
Berlin Wall Memorial
The outdoor exhibition on the history of the Berlin Wall, exemplified by Bernauer Strasse, can be seen on the border strip originally located in East Berlin. The Berlin Wall Memorial has been part of the Berlin Wall Foundation since 2009. After 1990, an association was set up in Bernauer Strasse to preserve the historical traces and remains of the Berlin Wall. This association then merged into the Berlin Wall Foundation after it was founded in 2008.
The design of the memorial
Rusty steel tracings mark the course of the border wall, Kollonenweg, signal fence or inner wall. The tracings of the border wall and the watchtowers are particularly effective in spatial terms. Excavation windows (sondages) reveal historical layers of the destroyed city.
The exhibition level on the historical death strip concentrates on a series of themed stations with carefully dosed information. Incident markers made of rusty steel mark the many sites of historical events on Bernauer Strasse. Against the backdrop of the Sophienfriedhof cemetery, on the other hand, the Window of Remembrance is a restrained expression of the memory of each individual victim of the Wall.
The concept expects the visitor to experience a high degree of complexity and atmospheric ambivalence. The site stands for the existence of the Wall but also for its overcoming. It stands for the permanent urban scar of the death strip, but also serves as a green meeting place for the districts of Mitte and Wedding. The memorial is therefore also an urban space in its own right.
