On the morning of October 25, 1961, residents of the building at Ackerstraße 42, which did not stand directly on the border, were evicted from their apartments. The curtains were left hanging on the windows to cover up the extent of the evictions. The evacuation of all buildings on Bernauer Straße that were located directly on the border had been completed three days earlier.
