In May 1962, Dieter T., who was only 18 years old, and four friends tried to flee to the West from the apartment building at Ackerstraße 43. Their escape failed. Dieter T. had managed to flee to the West just after the Wall was built in 1961, but had returned to East Germany. In July 1962 the group planned a third escape near the Charité Hospital, but it was discovered in the planning stage.
