To prevent further escape attempts from the border houses, the windows facing West Berlin were gradually bricked up. On August 22, 1961, the apartments on the elevated ground floor of Bernauer Straße 7 were the first to have their windows walled up. First the windows of deserted apartments were sealed. After the border houses were evacuated, all the windows and doors facing the West were systematically bricked up.
