With the help of a West Berlin fire brigade, Ella K., 69 years old, fled from her first­floor apartment at Bernauer Straße 23 just before midnight on September 11, 1961. The border guards did not notice her escape until she had made it safely to the West. They forced open the apartment door, but were unable to prevent it.
