On the evening of September 7, 1966, the border guard on Swinemünder Strasse noticed a man climbing over the inner fence at Schönholzer Strasse. His supervisor chased after the man and fired at him. The fugitive, Klaus N., took cover behind an anti-tank obstacle. The border soldiers assumed that he had been hit and wanted to arrest him, but he mana ged to climb over the inner wall unnoticed and escape back into East Berlin. An East German policeman who had watched the escape attempt from his apartment arrested Klaus N. on Brunnenstrasse.
