Renate L., a secretary for the East-Berlin housing construction administration, was accompanied by an East Berlin police officer when she inspected the building at Bernauer Strasse 31. When she briefly found herself alone and unobserved in the backyard, she seized the moment. She fled through the front door that had not yet been sealed up and ran to West Berlin.
