The military conscripts Udo S. and Burckhardt B. were on duty at Eberswalder Strasse on March 23, 1966. They were both unhappy serving at the border. They decided to flee that afternoon. They broke through the door in the blocking screen at Eberswalder Strasse and moved beyond the other border guards’ field of vision. To the right of the blocking screen, they climbed over the wall of the freight depot and jumped to the West. The escape was not detected until a West Berlin police officer called over to the border guards: “So! Now there are two fewer of you!”
