After the Wall was built, renovation work begun in the border houses was continued. A painter working at Brunnenstraße 139, a building that stood right behind the Wall, took advantage of the situation. On August 23, 1961, he ran from the building entrance towards the Wall that was approximately four meters away and jumped over it.
