Jan-Michael G. wanted to flee at Ruppiner Straße where gates in the inner wall and signal fence allowed border troops to pass through. Driving a heavy cargo truck on the evening of April 8, 1989, Jan-Michael G. broke through both gates. But the truck got entangled in a rope barrier that was especially designed to stop trucks. Jan-Michael G. was arrested and handed over to the secret police.
